    Puppy Playtime

Pups and kids love our daily puppy playtime!  While exploring the outdoor puppy play area, they had fun trying out the little slide, which is more like a puppy treadmill at this point. So silly!  Providing age appropriate obstacles and new experiences helps puppies gain confidence and empowered to interact with the world around them.

    Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)

Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) is a process we do that introduces mild stimulations to very young puppies in a controlled way. These stimulations help encourage the neurological system which improves the growth and development of the pup’s immune system, cardiovascular system, and stress tolerance. ENS is started on days 3-16 since that is when rapid neurological growth and development occur. This process consists of 5 simple and harmless exercises.  Each exercise is done for 3-5 seconds.

    1. Head up bum down.
    2. Head down bum up.
    3. Back resting in palm of both hands with tummy up.
    4. Tickle between toes on each foot.
    5. Feet down on cool damp towel.

    10 Step Puppy Handling

After ENS we continue developing touch tolerance and empowering our pups through a fun interaction focusing on 10 specific puppy handling techniques.  This handling also helps prepare pups for grooming, which is a regular part of ESSENTIAL COCKAPOO CARE.  We do this daily until pup goes to their furever home and encourage families to continue 10 Step Puppy Handling to develop trust and strengthen bonding.

    1. Eyes: Gently rub fingers over each eyelid, remove any eye boogies (very common in fluffy face doggies).
    2. Ears: Lift and flop ears gently and rub fingers down each ear.
    3. Mouth: Run finger along lips and gumline.
    4. Nose: We like to kiss those little puppy noses, but you can tap with a finger if you prefer.
    5. Neck: Gently rotate collar around the puppy's neck.
    6. Back: Glide hand down back several times from head to bum and along the sides.
    7. Tail/Bum: Flop tail around gently and pat hair around the bum, clean any "bum danglers" with diaper wipe.
    8. Tummy: Turn puppy over on their back and cradle in your arms while petting the tummy.
    9. Legs: rub fingers up and down each leg.
    10. Feet/Toes: Gently rub each foot making sure to get in-between each toe, around paw pads and touching each nail.

    Crate training

Crating allows a dog to have its own safe space.  That way it is empowered to be comfortable and confident with just its own company.  Dogs' natural instinct is to seek and thrive with a den.  Any small, closed space will work.  Learning to den periodically whether their people are home or not, will help avoid puppy separation anxiety.  Crating is a great tool, but it is very important that it is not overused.  A crate does not replace giving your pup plenty of unconfined living.

    Potty Training

Having a doggy door is such a quick and convenient way to potty train!  At 7 weeks old our smart pups are already excellent at keeping their potty business outside and not in their indoor living space!  We've found this method most helpful for pups furever families as they continue outdoor potty training.
